The
tensile strength and knot-tying properties of a surgical suture
material are determined not only by the starting material and
structure, but also by the thickness of the thread. Classification
of thread size must therefore be precise. Within the purview
of the European Pharmacopoeia (EP), suture size is classified
according to a decimal system. This denotes the diameter of
the suture as a multiple of 0.1 mm.

Unlike
the earlier DAB 6 and USP codes, the new metric code is directly
related to the actual diameter of the suture (e.g. EP 3 = 3
x 0.1 mm = 0.3 mm). As the USP system is still commonly used,
it is shown in the above table for comparison. *
