Woundcare Management
 The Veterinary Wound Library

Duggan Veterinary are delighted to reccomend the Veterinary Wound Library to our large veterinary clientle throughout Ireland.

Also, we are happy to reccomend the following website should you wish to purchase the manuka honey woundcare products featured on our website;

www.manuka.ie

It has  been developed specifically for veterinary professionals to access, develop and share techniques for animal wound management, by Ms Georgie Hollis who  is chief consultant to Duggan Veterinary ,Ireland, in evaluateing the most up to date technologies available for the management of open and reconstructed wounds.

A lack of species-specific evidence, supporting literature, basic technical guidance and limited exposure of the most up-to-date materials available leaves an open and growing gap between the human and veterinary application of modern dressings. The Veterinary Wound Library  helps to evaluate and make available information gained for research into better wound management encouraging evidence based skills and techniques.

PRODUCTS / BANDAGING & CASTING / WOUNDCARE

1. Advadraw

AdvadrawExcellent fluid management, capillary action.

Advadraw is a highly absorbent, non-adherent wound dressing with a wicking effect. The dressing has three components: a central wicking layer sandwiched between highly absorbent, soft viscose/polyester pads and an outer non-adherent contact layer.

The dressing actively draws fluid from the wound bed into the central wicking layer from where it is rapidly redistributed into the absorbent pads. This capillary action results in excellent fluid management while retaining a moist wound healing environment.

Features
Rapid absorption of wound exudate
Capillary action
Non-adherent
Superior fluid handling minimises leakage of exudate, extends dressing duration and minimises risk of maceration of surrounding skin
Can be easily cut and shaped to fit awkward wounds
Inert. Simple fabric construction minimises the risk of sensitivity reactions.

Indications
All acute and chronic wound types particularly:

Medium to highly exudative wounds
Cavity wounds
Draining sinuses/fistula

3. Citrugel
CitrugelNatural wound healing
Citrugel uses pectin derived from citrus fruit (mainly orange peel) combined with carboxy methyl cellulose and water to form a hydrogel with unique properties of absorption and hydration. There is a huge variation in the properties of different hydrogel dressings. Some are good at donating fluid into a wound which helps debride sloughy wounds, others are better at absorbing fluid which helps in the present of exudate. Citrugel does both. Citrugel has absorption and donation properties superior to other leading hydrogels. Absorbent particles of carboxymethylcellulose and citrus derived pectin absorb exudate, while the high water content (over 70% w/w) maintains a moist wound healing environment. Citrugel has excellent self-adherent properties and can absorb exudate while maintaining its structural integrity for prolonged periods. Citrugel is therefore easy to apply, stays in place when applied and retains its shape in the wound bed for long periods reducing the risk of maceration and leakage. The citrus derived pectin also has the unique characteristic of high compatibility with cell receptors. This may assist the wound healing process.

Indications
Citrugel is clinically indicated for the treatment of virtually all wound types, at any stage of healing, particularly:

  • Necrotic and sloughy wounds
  • Low to moderate exudate wounds
  • Leg ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Diabetic foot ulcers

Contraindications

  • High exudate wounds
  • Ischaemic necrosis. Rehydration of necrotic tissue in the presence of an impaired blood supply can cause wet gangrene and extension of tissue damage. Management of ischaemic necrosis should only be undertaken in close consultation with multidisciplinary team.

4. Eclypse
Super absorbency for problem wounds

EclypseEclypse is designed for the management of heavily exudating wounds. It is composed of:

A rapid wicking, low adherent contact layer designed to quickly draw fluid into the dressing, reducing the risk of leakage and maceration.
A sheet of super absorbent Xu-lock™ gelling crystals that provide rapid absorption and unsurpassed fluid handling.
A cellulose layer to add further absorption
An impermeable polyester backing designed to provide low friction on clothes or bandages, prevent strike-through and resist abrasion.
The dressing is durable and retains its structure even when fluid capacity is reached. The high fluid capacity means that dressing changes can be minimised even for the most exudative wounds, while increasing wear time.

Features

  • Rapid absorption
  • Massive fluid capacity
  • Low adherence
  • Impermeable backing
  • Strength and durability.

Indications

Moderate to heavily exuding wounds including:

  • Leg ulcers,
  • Sloughy wounds
  • Exudative sutured or dehisced post operative wounds
  • Fungating wounds
  • Donor sites.

Contra-indications

Presence of active bleeding.

Usage instructions

Eclypse is placed face down on wound surface with blue backing uppermost. For larger wounds several dressing can be placed side-by-side and secured with an appropriate tape or bandage. Eclypse can be left in place for up to 7 days but wear time will depend on level of exudate. Eclypse may become heavy and cause sagging when saturated. At this stage the dressing should be changed.
