STARTVAC®, as the first vaccine against mastitis registered by the EMEA, demonstrates HIPRA’s professionalism in obtaining products that anticipate market needs. The market of vaccination against mastitis is totally unknown in Europe to the majority of prescribers and even has a bad reputation for many of them.As an introduction, only 1% of animals in Europe are vaccinated against mastitis, whereas in the USA, 54% of the total herd are vaccinated. To what is this difference due? Mostly to the way the problem is approached. In Europe a curative solution is sought, whereas in the U.S., vaccination protocols are positioned as a preventive solution to the problem.
Likewise, in some EU countries such as Spain, blanket vaccination protocols have been used (all the animals vaccinated at a time), which causes several disadvantages - due to the lack of protection of animals at the time of greatest production - and good results are short term but no long-lasting immunity. In the U.S., protocols consist of vaccinating at pre- and post-partum, thereby achieving optimum protection at the time of maximum risk of loss of milk. Hence, they obtain longterm positive outcomes and a more evident and better cost/benefit ratio.
